Smoky, crisp, chill.

Butter lace cloaks a green bodice with

Orangeish daffodil tips crinkled

They say you’ll never forget it. I’m not exactly sure who ”they” is, but I know these mysterious people are out there.

I had the overwhelming privilege to see two amazing bands (namely, FLORENCE + AND THE MACHINE, and U2) from the equivalent of the third row of Vanderbilt’s entire football stadium. WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE IT! But, stubbornness prevails, so I will try anyways.

Florence Welch’s voice earnestly takes ones breath away. She moves from a rich, reverberating tone, straight into airy, ethereal notes, with not even a flinch. The set list included her most famous “Dog Days are Over” (which certainly got the crowd going), “Cosmic Love” (my absolute favorite!!), “You’ve Got the Love” (dedicated to her little sister and cousin), and “Drumming” (the song she opened with).

She darted and twirled around the stage like a nymph, fans blowing her gauzy teal sensation of a dress up like smoke. The vocals were stunning, the harpist truly talented—but I only wish it had been darker. The contrast of this show with the night would have been haunting.

It then came time for the true attraction, a band I believe to be one of the greatest of all: U2. One part political statement, one part guitar-shredding bliss, one part heart-wrenching compassion. Bono, The Edge, Adam, and Larry Mullen, Jr. (on drums) played all the greats…The stadium lit up with a thousand twinkling lights (cellphones) on the melancholy anthem “City of Blinding Lights.” “Beautiful Day” boasted crazy graphics on their veritable four-legged spaceship of a stage, as well as a tear-jerking video from an astronaut sending love to his wife.

Check out this sweet shot I snapped of the man himself…..

(DISCLAIMER: This is getting pretty artsy, so watch yourself or you might reach for the fake horn-rimmed glasses or a ugly old sweater).

Liking U2 is in no way passe, cliche, or conforming. It is just being honest with yourself. Here’s to one of the greatest bands of all-time!

Now Hear This: Dear Hipsters, I Hate You

i feel like this could get me in trouble in the hipster community….but oh well!

Dear Hipsters, I Hate You

It’s a Friday night and I find you standing outside a run-down dive bar, the kind of place that always has hepatitis on tap. A clove cigarette is resting between your lips as your fixed-gear bicycle leans against the wall beside you. In a minute, you’ll go in, saddle up to the bar and order a Pabst Blue Ribbon. With each sip, you’ll hope to swallow down your contentment for the world, but no matter what, you won’t rid yourself of that taste. You wouldn’t want to.

You hate most of the people you see. The corporate suits. The muscle-head jocks. The ditzy blondes and the competing Joneses. The sheep.

But that’s not why I hate you.

June 28th’s entry provided some food for thought, no doubt. I’m not sure why, but I am (almost) always befuddled when I see that word—apprehended. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it has definitions 1, 2 (a and b), and 3 on my favorite online dictionary source (yes, I do have a favorite) www.m-w.com; or maybe I just never took the time to understand it.

As far as I can tell, it is either transitive, in which case it means something like the following…

to arrest/seize

to perceive/become aware of

to anticipate with dread/anxiety

or, it’s intransitive, in which case it means something like this…

to grasp mentally

to understand

Sorry for the grammar lesson, but it’s crucial to grasping this passage!

here’s the verse quoted:

“If that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended.”

Philippians 3:12

I, however usually use the NIV, which states:

12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

Oswald Chambers (the author of this convicting, yet comforting devotional) states this: We are not here to work for God because we have chosen to do so, but because God has apprehended us.

He has seized us, made us become aware, allowed us to understand. So, in one way it is convicting…I far too often allow my self that credit which I am so blatantly undeserving of! Yet still, this comforts me. He has seized me, which means I lack control. In the case of a sinner attempting (oh-so futilely) to live for God, giving up control is a burden lifted off my shoulders, the binding and weighty yoke of an ox dashed to the ground.

to close—

“I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do …”

The ballad, from one of my FAVORITE bands THE AVETT BROTHERS), sings to the tender teen heart or somber soul.

Simple. Ethereal. Clean…meet “Laundry Room” (pun intended)

the art of teen indie movie-making

So last night I saw the latest in hipster film…..The Art of Getting By, starring Freddie Highmore (think adorable little boy in August Rush) and (as she will probably always be known) Julia Roberts’ niece, Emma Roberts.

It opened intriguingly enough, with George (Highmore) as a narrator, and teen plagued with the problem of pessimism. The unmotivated artiste spends his class time sketching, which is clearly his greatest talent. What starts as uncompromisingly cliche, however, grows deeper. The audience sees George mature before their eyes, as he realizes that his disrespect and constant laze are merely the wall he uses to guard himself.

Okay, so maybe every turn in the plot is precisely what the audience would expect. Maybe some of the writing is hokier than an Old Navy commercial. And perhaps Roberts’ acting reminds me a bit of a kindergarten play, where the kid gets by on a cute smile. But, this movie puts on a feast of food for thought, while shedding light on the introverts of the world. The cinematography, particularly the fresh angles, bleak color, and depth of field, provide for a visually stimulating flick.

Throw in a dash of teen romance, some indie tunes, and a bit of redemption—and this movie just might get by in the real world.

and while i’m off in dreamland, here’s a little...

and while i’m off in dreamland, here’s a little piece of an exceptionally classy, DIY peacock inspired wedding, courtesy of one of my favorite blogs- Ruffled!

to infinity and beyond...

one of my best friends recently returned from France—touring Nice, the city of love, and several cobblestone-streeted, ivy-ridden, romantic fairytale-esque towns.

my boyfriend is currently gallivanting across the golfing greens of Ireland with a bunch of bros.

a younger pal recently departed to Italy, where she will be sure to see the historic greats of Rome, fine art, and finer fashions.

and here i sit, never having left the country of my birth? the most exciting part of my day is the grilled mediterranean veggie naan-wich i had for dinner at the country club (while, mind you, with my constant companion and summer’s vocation, a six year old)? i even went to the mall—God forbid it, even the food court!

i cannot complain; it would neither be decent nor appropriate. but i can most certainly dream—dream of places far off, beyond the sea and the sky (okay well maybe not the sky), and far far from the curfew-clenched walls of my (parents’) humble abode.

as a graduation gift from sister and her husband, i received a (nicely worn) book—-Selected Poems by Mark Strand. In this semi-anthology, he masters the words, not in an oppressive way, but in a way which not a trace of fickle indecision exists. The rhythm quite reminds me of a barefoot jog along a path—nothing too dirty or dusty, but rather soft and cool. just to be sure we’re clear here…..MARK STRAND WROTE THIS POEM, NOT ME! i do, write poetry though, and will surely post some soon :-) enjoy!

above is my original photography.

“Lacking the wit and depth

That inform our dreams’

Bright landscape,

This countryside

Through which we walk

Is no less beautiful

For being only what it seems.

Rising from the dyed

Pool of its shade,

The tree we lean against

Was never made to stand

For something else,

Let alone ourselves.

Nor were these fields

And gullies planned

with us in mind.

We live unsettled lives

And stay in a place

Only long enough to find

We don’t belong.

Even the clouds, forming

Noiselessly overhead,

Are cloudy without

Resembling us and, storming

The vacant air,

Don’t take into account

Our present loneliness.

And yet, why should we care?

Already we are walking off

As if to say,

We are not here,

We’ve always been away.”

thank you, Modcloth for providing me with adequately priced (for the most part), unique (on the whole), vintage-inspired (and some actually vintage) clothes, accessories, shoes, and apartment thingies that ALWAYS keep me coming back for more.

Even as sweaty, dusty, and grimy as i was, I so enjoyed my first...

Even as sweaty, dusty, and grimy as i was, I so enjoyed my first bonnaroo experience. Oh how we take showers and electricity for granted!

other highlights included the following:

the oh-so-classy Florence Welch and her machine (hitting sky-high and so-low notes, stunning the crowd with energy and grace—i was blown away by “Cosmic Love” and “Dog Days Are Over” was just too much fun jumping around to!)

Chiddy Bang’s freestyle to topics like white girls with booty, Pokemon, and the Kentucky Derby

Allison Krauss’ crooning vocals, backed up by band members that have been touring with her for over 20 years, called Union Station

Girl Talk’s 2:30 AM - 4:45 AM all-out bash to all sorts of original mash-ups and crazy confetti cannons, giant balloons filled with confetti, a balloon-drop, beach balls, water shooting everywhere, a toilet paper gun (?), and a ridiculous lightshow

i will, in fact, be leaving for the great Bonnaroo music festival tomorrow morning at roughly 4 am, and thus, tonight is my big night of preparations. i’m a veritable bonnaroo virgin, and am certainly antsy, anxious, slightly nauseous, etc. i do intend to wake up at 3 tomorrow morning to shower.

i’m especially excited for the following:

matt & kim (who do not sound oriental, no matter how many times my dad asserts so)

camping (i need to rough it, im about to go to college!)

the black keys (recently turned on to them!)

getting away (it’s been a rough week)

cicadas (not really, i hate them with a passion

anywho, wish me luck! off to target to stock up on Clif bars and bug spray.

slam poetry at its finest.
